OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Despite very limited resources and ever-increasing demand, the Center for Advancement in Cancer Education has performed many services for individuals with cancer and has added enormous value to the cancer community over the past 30 years. The Center has:

  • Provided exceptional value to cancer patients and the health-care consuming community by offering extensive educational programming and individualized counseling.
     
  • Helped medical professionals providing conventional treatments to understand the benefits that can be derived from the clinical application of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).
     
  • Expanded its services from the tri-state Delaware Valley nationally and globally through lecture tours and via telephone, mail, broadcast and print media, and the internet.
     
  • Provided to nearly 30,000 cancer patients individualized consultation services that have greatly enhanced quality of life, significantly extended longevity, and in many cases resulted in complete recovery.
     
  • Presented nutrition and prevention lectures to more than 50,000 persons nationwide, as well as to audiences in Canada, Puerto Rico, Japan, Taiwan, and Israel. 
     
  • Translated and delivered presentations in Spanish and French.
     
  • Organized and conducted 18 annual “Immuno-Supportive Cancer Care” conferences for cancer care professionals featuring nearly 100 prominent doctors from prestigious academic and medical institutions who have presented their work in complementary and alternative cancer therapies, clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, psychoneuro-immunology and other innovative approaches.
     
  • Provided dozens of lectures at local medical and nursing schools and at other professional training institutions, including Temple University Medical School, the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, West Chester University School of Nursing, and Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine.
     
  • Sponsored and conducted hundreds of classes, workshops and lectures for the general public on nutrition, cancer prevention and treatment options.
     
  • Designed and implemented a series of dinner lectures on dietary prevention of cancer presented at Philadelphia area Whole Foods and other natural foods markets, as well as various restaurants.
     
  • Created, organized and presented 17 annual Food & Health Expos honoring National Nutrition Month and featuring prominent speakers and quality exhibitors targeting improved nutrition awareness for the general public.
     
  • Assembled, maintained, and made available an extensive reference library of rare cancer and health information accessible to the community.
     
  • Developed and distributed customized cancer educational materials, CDs, and DVDs, including the video Breast Cancer: The Diet Connection.
     
  • Published its quarterly magazine, Immune Perspectives, for 13 years and its periodic newsletter, Health News & Views, for 21 years.
     
  • Sponsored its own research study on psycho-social risk factors in women with cancer, now in the final stage of completion, with only additional funding needed to complete the statistical analysis and publish the research results.
     
  • Developed an extensive body of nationwide referrals, by specialty, of physicians and complementary and alternative medicine practitioners.
     
  • Trained health care professionals and students on site at the Center’s facility and supervised practicums for nurses, social workers, psychologists and medical students.
     
  • Provided in-services and continuing education credits for selected programs offered to practicing oncology nurses, hospice nurses, massage therapists, and other medical professionals for dozens of institutions and organizations.  These  included the American Cancer Society, the Oncology Nursing Society, Helene Fuld School of Nursing ,  Pennsylvania Hospital, Cooper Medical Center, and Thomas Jefferson University Medical Center.
     
  • Initiated a dialogue with doctors, nurses and nutritionists at traditional medical institutions on nutritional and complementary approaches to preventing and managing cancer.
     
  • Been featured in the 2003 “Options – Healing Cancer Holistically” calendar.
     
  • Become sanctioned as a United Way specific care charity.
     
  • Made over 40 presentations to patient conferences and support groups sponsored by many hospitals and organizations, including the University of Pennsylvania Cancer Center, Hunterdon Medical Center, The Breast Cancer Resource Center, Gilda's Club, the Linda Creed Foundation, and Mercy Hospital.
     
  • Participated as presenter and exhibitor at several  national and international symposia on complementary and alternative cancer care and in dozens of holistic health care conventions and health fairs.
     
  • Given hundreds of television, radio and internet interviews.
     
  • Been featured in numerous newspaper and magazine articles, including the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Magazine, and Prevention magazine.
     
  • Been published as a full chapter in three books (Hess, Evaluating Alternative Cancer Therapies; Mizrahi, Potentiating Health and the Crisis of the Immune System, and Voell, Cancer Report) and received mention in several other books on CAM approaches to cancer.
     
  • Created the Beat Cancer Kit Series
     
  • Received over $300,000 in corporate and foundation grants, including $25,000 from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and $30,000 from Philadelphia area Whole Foods Markets.
     
  • Awarded its Seal of Approval to Heintzman Farms Dakota Flax Gold, Plastaket Champion Juicer, and NSA Juice Plus+.
     
  • Created and delivered breast cancer prevention training programs to more than 500 medically-underserved African American women in Philadelphia.
     
  • Sponsored and starred in an episode of “Christina Cooks” TV show aired on Comcast CN8 in over four million homes in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
