Is Your Make Up Increasing Your Risk of Breast Cancer?
April 13, 2015 | Author: Dr. Véronique DesaulniersYou are what you eat. Most people these days wouldn’t argue with this statement. Yet did you know that when you use personal skin products, you are literally eating through your skin? The average person is exposed to over 126 toxic chemicals per day through the use of these products. The reason for this could be the fact that, of the over 10,000 chemicals used in personal skin products, only 13% have been tested for safety. The result is an overload of toxic chemicals in the body, many of which have been linked to breast cancer.
How Toxic Skin Products Effect You
The skin is the largest “organ” of the body. It serves several functions:
-
- It cushions and protects deeper tissues;
- It is a sensory organ to detect pain, pressure and temperature;
- It helps regulate our internal core temperature; and
- It is the largest organ of elimination.
Because of the vast supply of capillaries in the skin, any substance that is applied to it inevitably ends up in the bloodstream. This means that if you apply something like a non-natural *sunscreen to your arms and shoulders, you are literally “eating” that substance through your skin. Skin care products are also ingested through the lips and through inhalation in the form of powders and perfumes.
You may think that if you use these products in small amounts, there couldn’t possibly be any harm done. However, consider the day-to-day application of a commercial body lotion:
If you use only one tablespoon of lotion on your skin every day, in five years you would have ingested over 114 cups (that’s over 7 gallons!) of the lotion into your body. If it contained silicone-derived ingredients, petroleum byproducts, chemical fragrances and artificial dyes, then you will have subjected your body to gallons of toxins that accumulated in your liver, colon and fatty cells.
There are thousands of chemicals that are used (again, many without being adequately tested) in the personal care products industry. Here are just a few samples of the effects some of these toxins have on your health:
-
- Phenoxyethanol, used as a preservative in fragrances and lotions, is a toxin that has been known to effect the reproductive system;
- Parabens, a preservative used in lotions and shampoos, effects the reproductive system and have also been found in breast cancer tissue;
- Propylene glycol, a humectant and fragrance ingredient, is toxic to the Immune System;
- Sodium Lauryl sulfate, a foaming agent, is toxic to the nervous system as well as to the skin, eyes and lungs;
- Formaldehyde, a preservative, is a powerful carcinogenic that damages DNA.
Take Care of Your Skin…Naturally!
There are low-cost alternatives to buying commercial lotions, shampoos, sunscreens, creams and make-up. Besides making your own, one example I love to highlight because it is so inspirational is the company Ava Anderson Non Toxic. This company was formed in 2009 when a young woman (Ava Anderson) had the courage and insight to speak out about the serious issue of personal skin product toxicity. When she discovered that the products she herself was using were carcinogenic, she did something about it. Not only did she do her research and change her own buying habits, she created a non-toxic and organic skin and home care product line.
Ava’s website encourages you to look up the toxicity of each ingredient listed on the back of the products sitting in your shower and on your vanity table. The Skin Deep Cosmetic Database, created by the Environmental Working Group, is another great resource. It reports on over 10,000 ingredients and 74,000 products. Their information is based on respected scientific studies from key research groups around the world. They also list the diseases associated with each chemical.
Being proactive with prevention is the foundation of “The 7 Essentials System™“ for healing the body naturally. Being proactive involves taking responsibility for what you put ON your body as well as what you put IN it. You can start today by simply replacing one toxic product with an organic and non-toxic alternative. Before you know it, you will have one less source of toxicity in your life. Be diligent about reading labels to ensure that your body care products are “safe enough to eat.”
