Barbara’s Story: Overcoming Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer with Faith, Determination, and the Right Support

In October of 2005, Barbara faced what many would consider an insurmountable challenge. At 65 years old, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 ovarian cancer, a daunting prognosis. But Barbara, a woman of faith and conviction, made a bold decision: she would not undergo chemotherapy. She had witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of the treatment on others and resolved to take a different path.

I wanted to live a better life, no matter how long or short it would be,” Barbara shared. “Even if I failed, I refused to put myself through the torture of chemo.

With this resolve, Barbara turned to prayer. She asked God to guide her to someone who could help her navigate her cancer journey in a way that aligned with her values and goals. That prayer led her to Nora Coffey of the HERS Foundation, a renowned advocate for women’s health.

When Barbara called Nora, she was met with compassion and understanding. Nora listened to her story and said, “I may have just the person you need to talk to.” After a moment’s pause, Nora added, “Hold on. I believe I have her business card.

Barbara prayed silently, hoping Nora would find that card. To her relief, Nora retrieved the contact information of Susan Silberstein, Ph.D., the founder of the Center for Advancement in Cancer Education, now known as BeatCancer.Org.

A Life-Changing Consultation

Barbara set up an initial consultation with Susan and arrived with a stack of medical reports and test results in hand, ready for a deep dive into her diagnosis. To her surprise, Susan gently set the papers aside. “I do not need any of those reports,” Susan said. “We are going to work on you and your healing.

Barbara left that meeting feeling a spark of hope, though still unsure if this approach would work. A short time later, she attended a presentation by Susan called Kitchen Chemotherapy. The information shared during that talk deeply resonated with her, providing actionable strategies to take control of her health through lifestyle and nutritional changes.

Determined, Barbara began to follow Susan’s advice.

A Miracle Unfolds

Today, in November 2024, Barbara is 84 years old and still cancer-free—19 years past the date doctors thought she would succumb to the disease. Her incredible journey of healing and transformation has become a testament to the power of faith, holistic approaches, and the right guidance.

Barbara recently called BeatCancer.Org after finding a postcard we sent over a year ago. On that day, she felt compelled to pick up the phone—not to seek help, but simply to express her gratitude. “I just wanted to thank Susan,” Barbara said. “She changed my life.”
