Five Questions You Should Ask A Holistic Dentist

There is absolutely no denying the connection between the state of your mouth and the rest of your body when it comes to breast cancer. Working with a holistic or biological dentist that is a perfect match for you is essential if you are wanting to get to one of the ROOT cause of your breast cancer.

In the sea of dental professionals out there, how do you know which one is right for you? Here are five questions to ask when you are shopping for a holistic or biological dentist.

1. How do you see the condition of my teeth being related to my breast cancer?

Let’s face it: unfortunately, there are a lot of dentists out there that may call themselves “holistic” (taking advantage of the buzz word in order to bring in more clients), but really are not. A truly holistic dentist, first and foremost, will have the innate understanding that what is happening in your oral cavity is intimately connected to what is happening to the rest of your body, whether that be breast cancer, diabetes, an autoimmune condition or heart disease.

“Holistic is about the ‘whole’ which means, [the mouth] is connected to the whole body. That is the bottom line,” says Dr. Fen-Hui Chen, DDS, of La Jolla Center for Holistic Dentistry in Southern California and a practicing holistic dentist for the last 21 years. Without hesitation, a holistic dental professional who has been trained in mind-body medicine in addition to dental procedures will have no problem discussing the connection between your mouth and your overall health in a way you can understand.

2. Do you perform root canals or use mercury (silver) fillings?

Simply put, the answer to both of these question should be “no.”  There is no harmless level of mercury and any holistic dentist worth their weight will know this. Many holistic dentists will have a “no metal” policy in general or will offer alternatives such as bio-compatible resins or zirconium in lieu of the more “benign” metals like titanium and gold for implants and fillings.

A quality holistic dentist will also understand the dangers of root canal. In fact, many individuals today come to holistic dentists to have their metal fillings and infected root-canaled teeth removed. If you are looking for a holistic dentist to perform one of these procedures, make sure that this individual is well-trained and experienced before making that appointment.

3. Do you offer natural alternatives to antibiotics and conventional painkillers?

There are many ways to kill an infection besides conventional antibiotics. Holistic dentists will have a wide range of options available, including ozone therapy, vitamin C therapy and cytokine therapy, just to name a few. Their philosophies on the use of antibiotics may vary, however. It is up to you to decide whether you wish to work with a holistic dentist that can write a prescription for antibiotics in a severe situation, such as an infected tooth that is causing complications to surrounding systems.

In general, though, a conscious holistic dentist will offer alternatives first before reaching for the prescription pad. Ask your potential professional about their philosophy regarding drugs. They should not hesitate to tell you.

4. What testing and evaluation techniques do you offer besides x-rays?

“The mouth has the most complex bacteria of the whole body,” Dr. Chen says. Because a true holistic dentist has an intimate understanding of body systems as a whole, the kinds of bacteria that resides in the mouth (and especially those with elevated levels) will give him or her strong clues as to how that substance is effecting the rest of the body. Forward-thinking holistic dentists will often order tests through reputable and high-quality laboratories such as Hal Huggins’ Dental DNA. These facilities test oral saliva for dozens of bacterium, viruses, fungal microbes and parasites.

In addition, a truly holistic dentist will use x-rays, even digitals, sparingly. Remember, radiation exposure is cumulative so be aware of “trigger-happy” dentists who insist on doing conventional X-rays with every visit.

5. Do you use fluoride or dental sealants?

Again, the answer should be “no.” The kind of holistic dentist you want to work with will be up on the latest findings regarding fluoride as well as the harmful effects of toxic chemicals. They will know that fluoride can reduce IQ, weaken bones and harm the thyroid. They should not even provide fluoride treatments as an option, nor will they offer you dental sealants that contain BPA (Bisphenol A), a hormone-disrupting toxin which has been linked to breast cancer.  (Note: research conducted through the University of Texas found that BPS, a chemical cousin to BPA, is just as harmful, so be aware of sealants that are “BPA free.” This often means that they contain BPS instead).

Finding a holistic or biological dentist that is just right for you is no less important than finding the right integrative doctor.
