Ginger: Ten Thousand Times More Effective Than Chemo for Breast Cancer Stem CellsMarch 5, 2017 | Author: Veronique Desaulniers
A recent study conducted by the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology in India discovered something amazing about ginger. The researchers compared how a particular substance found in ginger root compared with the chemotherapy drug Taxol (i.e. Paclitaxel). Specifically, they looked at how the two substances affected breast cancer stem cells.
Using a three-dimensional model, they found that Taxol had very little effect on cancer stem cells. An active constituent of ginger root, 6-Shogaol, however, appeared to target them directly. This led the researchers to declare ginger to be 10,000 times more effective at killing cancer stems cells than conventional chemotherapy!
Why You Should Care about Breast Cancer Stem Cells
So what is so important about cancer stem cells?
This is a good question because there are literally thousands of individuals undergoing traditional cancer treatment right now who have no idea how important eradicating cancer stem cells are to their overall healing. In fact, did you know that the majority of women with breast cancer who die from the disease do so not because of the primary cancer, but from cancer metastasis, the process by which cancer cells travel from one part of the body another?
In fact, cancer metastasis accounts for 90 percent of all cancer deaths. And cancer stem cells are often the catalyst for this process.
According to researchers from Harvard Medical School, “Results from studies in animal models suggest that specific subtypes of breast cancer may direct metastasis through recruitment and activation of haematopoietic cells.” Haematopoietic cells are basically stem cells.
Healthy stem cells are like “blank slates” and are vital to the ongoing rejuvenation of the body. They can turn into muscle cells, organ cells or even neurological cells. Cancer stem cells, however, turn into one thing only—other cancer cells. In order to get rid of breast cancer (or most any other cancer) once and for all, you must eliminate cancer stem cells that can lie dormant for years before popping up in other parts of the body.
None of the conventional methods of treatment have been effective at eradicating cancer stem cells completely. Lucky for those who are on a healing path with cancer, there ARE substances in nature that specifically target cancer stem cells.
6-Shogaol, found in ginger, is one of them. In the Indian study, 6-Shogaol was able to target breast cancer stem cells by inducing “programmed cell death” (i.e. apoptosis) as well as by poisoning cancer stem cells outright. 6-Shogaol did not affect healthy stem cells or other healthy cells around the tumor area. Research published in the Journal of Biomedicine and Biotechnology suggests similar results.
And breast cancer is not the only cancer type 6-Shogaol can affect. Studies have shown the same conclusions for prostate, ovarian, skin, pancreatic, lung, liver and colorectal cancers.
Ginger’s Other Benefits
Ginger is a true superfood because of its many other healing effects besides its effect on cancer. It can also help with:
- digestive issues and nausea, including morning sickness in pregnant women
- heart disease
- pain reduction
- inflammation, and more
Why Doesn’t Conventional Oncology Endorse Ginger?
Sadly, the “big three” traditional cancer protocols—surgery, chemotherapy and radiation—are big business. Why conventional medicine continues to “turn a blind eye” on natural methods of truly healing cancer boils down to one thing—money, and patent-based revenue dollars for pharmaceutical companies that sponsor most cancer research.
But just because conventional medicine does not recognize the amazing healing effects of substances like ginger doesn’t mean that you cannot use them for your own healing. After all, would you rather utilize a drug such as Taxol that produces side effects like blurred vision, ulcers, fatigue, back pain, painful urination, diarrhea, hair loss, brain fog, inflammation, impaired breathing and a compromised immune system—or would you rather use a proven cancer healing protocol that has absolutely no side effects whatsoever?
Food is Medicine
The incredible thing about nutrition-based healing is that, unlike the allopathic model that mostly utilizes substances which counter the natural functions of the body, healing herbs, supplements, foods and other natural modalities are designed to work with your body’s natural healing mechanisms.
The Indian researchers stated in their final report that “dietary compounds are welcome options for human diseases due to their time-tested acceptability by human bodies.”
Those are wise words to remember as you continue your healing journey with cancer!
[Editor’s Note: To my understanding, the best form is to use the actual root. Either eat about 3.5 oz of fresh shaved ginger daily, juice it with carrots and greens, or brew 1-2 inches of fresh cut root (if the skin is smooth it does not have to be peeled) in hot water for 10-20 minutes. I would start at a low dose and increase gradually, as it may be irritating to some people. The spice powders and supplements are not particularly effective. You should also know that the research discussed above was done with the active derivative of ginger, 6-Shogaol, and therefore we cannot extrapolate that consuming the ginger plant itself will produce identical results.]
